Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite GT-I9060 swings by the FCC

Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite GT-I9060 swings by the FCC
Expected to be officially announced at MWC 2014, Samsung's Galaxy Grand Lite (model number GT-I9060) should be a step down from the Galaxy Grand 2 that was introduced last month. This, of course, means it will be cheaper.

While Samsung has not confirmed the existence of the new Galaxy Grand GT-I9060, the FCC approved the device today. Unfortunately, the Federal Commission doesn't reveal much abut it. But it confirms that it's a “phone with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth”, while its battery appears to be a 2,100 mAh one.

The rest of the new Galaxy's features supposedly include a 5 inch display with 480 x 800 pixels, dual SIM capabilities, 5MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera, quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and MicroSD card support. The handset may run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean at launch.

It's said that the Galaxy Grand Lite will be available in three color versions: black, orange and "lime green."

Another "Lite" device that Samsung is reportedly preparing for early 2014 is the Galaxy Note Lite, which - according to a recent rumor - could also have a green version. Is here a pattern that Samsung's affordable handsets will follow next year, perhaps inspired by Apple's green iPhone 5C? We don't know yet, but we assume we're going to find out soon.

BlackBerry's Chen: We're still the leader in enterprise

BlackBerry's Chen: We're still the leader in enterprise
BlackBerry CEO John Chen wrote an editorial for CNBC on Monday, trying to explain that BlackBerry is stronger and in better shape than most believe. The executive says that the company "is strong financially, technologically savvy and is well-positioned for the future." Perhaps the most important sentence that Chen wrote, deals with BlackBerry's position in the business world and the security of the platform. He states that BlackBerry remains the leader in mobile-device management.
According to Chen, BlackBerry is the only MDM provider that the DoD can use. All seven of the G7 governments are 'Berry users, and most companies in regulated industries still count on BlackBerry for secure communications. As for the future of the company, Chen points out that 40 million iOS and Android users have signed up for BBM, which he calls "the most secure mobile-messaging service," and he says that BlackBerry plans on monetizing BBM to bring in revenue. The executive adds that QNX is being used by automobile manufacturers as a leading M2M technology.
"When it comes to enterprise, we're still the leader. Don't be fooled by the competition's rhetoric claiming to be more secure or having more experience than BlackBerry. With a global enterprise customer base exceeding 80,000, we have three times the number of customers compared to Good, AirWatch and MobileIron combined. This makes BlackBerry the leader in mobile-device management."-John Chen, CEO, BlackBerry

Chen also hints at some new capabilities for the company that will be announced at CES next month, along with some cloud services. The new BlackBerry CEO says that the company has a strong cash position with $3 billion on the balance sheet. He says, "The journey has just begun." Let's hope that this time, the journey leads to a better ending.

LG's L Series II phones to get premium "Knock" feature via maintenance update in January

LG's L Series II phones to get premium
LG announced on Sunday morning in Korea that its premium feature "Knock", once known as "KnockON," will be standard on future models. LG's L Series II handsets will receive the feature through a maintenance update scheduled for next month. "KnockON" was developed as a way to quickly turn on a sleeping LG G2 handset. With the flagship's power button on the back of the phone, users can more easily awaken the unit with a double tap to the screen.

Following its debut on the LG G2, "Knock" made its way to the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet, and the LG G Flex. The latter, featuring a curved screen, also has its power and volume buttons located on the back of the device.

Because those using the three LG devices with "Knock" were so enthralled with the feature, the South Korean based OEM decided to whip up a version for the LG L Series II models so that as many LG customers as possible can experience it.

"Knock is distinctively an LG UX and a great example of what happens when you marry the latest in mobile technology with consumer-centric insights. No one ever thought that a power button needed to be improved until our engineers wondered why they couldn’t turn the entire screen into a power button."-Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO, LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company

Google grabbed the most global media attention of any company in 2013

No less a media giant than Dow Jones crowned a new champion as the most mentioned company in the global media during 2013. According to the news service's DJX Factiva product, Google was mentioned by the global media a total of 123,769 times which beat out the 120,451 times that the global media printed the Apple name. For Apple, this was a 27% drop from its leading 2012 total of 165,100. It also was the lowest score for the Cupertino based firm since 2010 when Apple was listed 89,222 times.

Other names in the mobile industry include Microsoft, which was named 84,174 times. Sony finished the year with 46,468 mentions while Nokia had 29,935, RIM (now BlackBerry) tallied 29,638 and China Mobile managed 5,302.

Google's best month for publicity was May when it had 13,336 mentions in the global media, most likely due to Google I/O, which took place in that time period. Apple's press coverage peaked in September with 15,270 mentions in the global media, no doubt due to the widespread launch of the Apple iPhone 5s and Apple iPhone 5c.

Rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 SM-T320 appears at the FCC

Rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 SM-T320 appears at the FCC

Yet another Samsung tablet has been approved by the FCC – the Samsung SM-T320. This is one of the several upcoming tablets expected to be announced by Samsung in early 2014. If rumors are to be trusted, this particular device should be known as the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 once it is released and it could be positioned in the upper mid-range or high-end tablet segment.

As the name implies, we're dealing with a slate sporting an 8.4-inch screen. The FCC filing for the SM-T320 does not reaffirm this claim, but cargo data from the Indian agency Zauba does. And besides, the physical size of the device seems suitable for a display of this diagonal size. Further hardware and software specs aren't being listed, although we do know that this Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 should support Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac. Also, there appears to be a camera with flash on the tablet's back, as seen in the drawing below.

The Samsung SM-T320 Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is likely to be unveiled officially in mid-February, meaning that we're probably going to see it on display at the Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona.

Only 2 million LG G2s sold until now? Sales reportedly affected by the launch of Nexus 5

Only 2 million LG G2s sold until now? Sales reportedly affected by the launch of Nexus 5

Earlier this year, when LG released its G2 flagship smartphone, it said that it hoped to sell 10 million units around the globe. However, it doesn’t look like the company’s expectations will be met.

According to a DigiTimes report based on the chatter of unnamed industry sources, LG sold just over 2 million G2 units until now. Allegedly, the release of Google Nexus 5 shortly after the G2 affected sales of the latter. The Nexus 5 is significantly cheaper, while offering a relatively similar set of specs. The new Nexus also has the advantage of offering Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, while the G2 is still running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. You can check out our Nexus 5 vs LG G2 article for a closer look at the two handsets and the differences between them.

Since the Nexus 5 is also made by LG, the South Korean company is probably not too affected by this. And perhaps the manufacturer will have better luck with its next flagship smartphone, the G3 (expected to be released in the second half of 2014).

DigiTimes also talks about the low sales numbers of HTC’s One and Huawei’s Ascend P6. While exact sales figures for HTC’s flagship aren’t known, the P6 seems to have been sold in about 3 million units (7 million less than Huawei was planning to sell). The Taiwanese publication further notes that disappointing sales of flagship devices could seriously affect market share rankings next year. However, it's too early to tell if that's the case, as we first have to wait for official figures from manufacturers to have a clear view of the whole picture.

Nokia pulls Here Maps from iTunes because of iOS 7

article-title

Nokia has decided to remove its Here Maps iPhone application from iTunes claiming that elements of iOS 7 "harm" the "user experience".
The app was originally released to fill the void left by Apple's removal of Google Maps as a hard coded app and replacement by the then buggy Apple Maps service. However, it is Here Maps that has since been labelled buggy, with the Indian Express going as far as saying that in recent times it was unusable. "We tested the app on three Apple devices and it was unusable on all of them," the site says.
It was also the site that first published confirmation that Nokia had withdrawn the app from the Apple App Store. In a statement to the Indian Express, Nokia cited the release of iOS 7 as the problem.
"We have made the decision to remove our Here Maps app from the Apple App Store because recent changes to iOS 7 harm the user experience," the Finnish company said.
"iPhone users can continue to use the mobile web version of Here Maps under m.here.com., offering them core location needs, such as search, routing, orientation, transit information and more, all completely free of charge."

Sony Xperia SP might be updated to Android 4.3 in the near future

Sony Xperia SP might be updated to Android 4.3 in the near future
Sony earlier this month started rolling out official Android 4.3 updates for six of its devices. The Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra were the first to be updated. The Xperia Z, ZR, ZL and Tablet Z followed.

One of this year’s Xperias that was left out was the Xperia SP. But fret not, SP users, as it appears that Android 4.3 for your handset is coming very soon.

A new firmware build (12.1.A.0.253) fort he SP was certified just two days ago, and XperiaBlog reports that this should be an Android 4.3 build. Moreover, an XDA user from Hungary, who seems to be an official beta tester for Sony, recently posted a screenshot showing that 4.3 Jelly Bean is already running on his Xperia SP.

It’s expected that all versions of the Xperia SP (C5302, C5303 and C5306) will be updated to 4.3, although exact timing will probably depend on carrier and country.

As reported back in November, the Xperia SP should also get Android 4.4 KitKat, but only starting 2014.

Samsung in 2014: Pocket-lint predicts

article-title

A new year is almost upon us and with that come lots of new gadgets and products to look forward to - or so we hope.
We have already predicted what we think Apple will be bringing to the table in 2014 based on rumours, leaks, analysts and insiders, and now it is time to give Samsung a little of that Mystic Meg magic.
As with our Apple predictions round-up though, keep in mind that none of these products are confirmed, with the odd exception. The company might prove us all wrong and not make a peep this year, forcing you to stick with what you have, but at the rate Samsung is going we’d say that's highly unlikely.

Galaxy S5

This might not be confirmed, but let's be honest here, the chances of Samsung launching a new flagship Galaxy smartphone, just as it has done the last few years, are pretty high.
Rumour has it, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be joining us by the end of March 2014, bringing with it a better display, better build and more exciting camera. Claims also suggest there will be a more powerful processor and bigger capacity battery on board too.

Galaxy Note 3 Lite

Given that the Galaxy Note 3, launched at the end of 2013, has become the fastest-selling phablet to date, it is no surprise there have been suggestions of a more affordable model thought to be coming in February.
The Galaxy Note 3 Lite is said to be trading in the Note 3's Super AMOLED display in favour of an LCD display, as well as introducing entry-level specs to keep the costs down and help open up a new area in the market for Samsung.

Galaxy Note 4

Although there have been few rumours of a Galaxy Note 4 as yet, if the past few years are anything to go by, we will see a new Note arrive towards the latter half of 2014. Given that the Note 3 has only really just arrived, it is hard to say what developments the company will make for the next Note, but we would expect to see more power, weight and size savings, along with more apps to complement the S Pen.
The Super AMOLED display on the Note 3 is beautiful and was a big resolution jump from the Note 2 so it may be that the Note 4 will do the same again. A recent analyst day in Samsung's home town of South Korea presented a road map of where the company is heading with display resolutions. Although 4K was predicted for 2015, the 'gap' year was still proposing a jump to 2560 x 1440 so fingers crossed.
There has also been a rumour to suggest the Galaxy Note 4 will be taking a leap in terms of camera too, with a 20-megapixel sensor said to be in the pipeline for this device.

Galaxy Core Advance

null
The Samsung Galaxy Core Advance is one of the products in this round up that has been confirmed by Samsung and is set to appeal to the mid to low-end market when it is launched in the early part of 2014.
It will pack a 4.7-inch 800 x 480 TFT screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, expandable through microSD up to a further 64GB. There will also be a 5-megapixel camera on the rear and 0.3-megapixel snapper on the front. It will also bring back the physical keys of former Android handsets.

Galaxy Round

null
In the last of the smartphone predictions for the company on our list, the Samsung Galaxy Round was announced in 2013 but has yet to hit the shelves so we expect this will happen in 2014. The company might even expand the flexible smartphone line-up in the year ahead.
The curved display sits on the opposite axis to the LG G Flex and comes with a 5.7-inch 1080p display, seemingly taking some of its styling from the Galaxy Note 3 with a faux leather back. There's plenty of power with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and 3GB of RAM, as well as all the usual Samsung software.

First Tizen devices

null
Both Samsung and Intel revealed that a new wave of devices running the Tizen operating system would be revealed on 23 February 2014 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Although it was not clear what kind of devices, it is thought smartphones would be a safe bet after the first Tizen smartphone was delayed following an expected 2013 release.
The Tizen operating system is set to be an alternative to Android, just as the Firefox OS launched by Mozilla in 2013. A version of the the software was shown on the Galaxy S4 in September 2013 featuring a clean user interface with a Windows Phone feel to the tile layout. The strong colour variations and notifications gave it a hint of Android crossed with iOS 7.

Galaxy Gear 2

null
Keeping in line with the Galaxy range, but moving into smartwatch territory, it is likely we will see the next generation of Galaxy Gear launch in 2014. While the original smartphone companion received some great reviews, the general conclusion was that it could be improved in a couple of areas.
We suspect the Galaxy Gear 2 will be arriving sooner rather than later and will feature a better user interface, more streamlined design and a more open ecosystem for app compatibility. According to the rumours, we can expect it at CES featuring its own built-in GPS, which would be brilliant coupled with that 4GB on-board memory. With the watch running apps and music, it would mean you could leave your phone at home when out for a run.

Galaxy Tab 3 Lite

In terms of tablets, it looks as though 2014 will be a busy year for Samsung, with rumours suggesting the company has plans to launch four new devices to the tablet market.
One of the tablets is thought to be the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, which is said to be launching for 100 Euros according to a report from SamMobile. Other rumours have also suggested the company will be introducing a 12.2-inch Galaxy Note, as well as 13.3-inch tablet.
The 12.2-inch Galaxy Note is allegedly set to come with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 8-megapixel rear-camera, 2-megapixel front-camera, and 32GB of storage. As for the 12.2-inch display, it is rumoured to have a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1600, making for a incredibly sharp experience.
In terms of the 13.3-inch tablet, Android and Windows dual-boot support has been claimed so we will have to wait and see what comes from this.

Cheaper, curved, UHD TVs

null
Samsung has already announced a 105-inch curved UHD TV, and it is likely we will see more curved Smart TVs with 4K compatibility coming to the market from the company next year.
As Netflix has started the ball rolling with plans to stream 4K content in 2014, we expect 4K will begin to push into the mainstream with companies making it more affordable so people will want to be a part of it.
The 105-incher announced was a "curved UHD TV" boasting a 5120 X 2160 screen resolution with a 21:9 super widescreen aspect ratio. Samsung said: "The 105-incher adopts a 'Quadmatic Picture Engine' which delivers all content in UHD-level picture quality no matter what the source is."
We might not see all of these devices come to light, or perhaps not all the specs rumoured, but it certainly looks like it will be a very exciting year for Samsung so we will be keeping our eyes peeled and ears open to bring you all the latest news as it arrives.

Priced at ~$160, Nokia Lumia 525 can be a hot seller in China

Priced at ~$160, Nokia Lumia 525 can be a hot seller in China
Nokia’s latest entry-level Windows Phone 8 handset, the Lumia 525, has yet to see a global release. It was launched in Singapore earlier this month (costing around $200 there), and now it’s also available to purchase in China, where it costs even less.

Nokia China’s official website lists the Lumia 525 as being priced at $180 (1,099 CNY). However, following the links to the online stores of China Unicom and TMall reveals that the handset is being sold for just $163 (999 CNY). This may lead to high sales numbers in China.

Sure enough, Chinese customers are used to low prices (even lower than this), but the Nokia brand is still strong in the country, and the Lumia 525 is the only new WP8 handset that doesn’t cost more than $200.

The 525 was announced by Nokia in November as the successor to the Lumia 520 (the best-selling Windows Phone device to date). Its features include a 4 inch WVGA IPS display, dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon S4 MSM8227 CPU, 5MP rear camera, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support.

Since the 520 is selling well in the US, Nokia may also release the Lumia 525 there at some point. However, for now there is no official word on this.

Google in 2014: Pocket-lint predicts

Google had a successful year, with more profits, more products, rising stock price and a stronghold on the mobile OS market worldwide, but 2014 is on the horizon, so what's in store for the next 12 months?
Here are our predictions for what to expect from Google in the new year. Please bear in mind that these are predictions based on everything we’ve seen and heard within the industry in 2013 - so don’t be surprised if Google changes its course drastically or scraps some of its plans.
That said, let's speculate.

Android TV

A Gigaom report in October noted that Google might soon cease using the Google TV label and require all new devices to be rebranded as "Android TV". Since mid-2013, Google TV manufacturers including Sony and LG have stopped using "Google TV" branding, hinting an announcement may be coming soon.
null
An official Android TV announcement is yet to be made by Google, as the company has struggled getting the Google TV platform off the ground, but it cold come in 2014. The move to Android TV could potentially allow manufacturers to add custom software on top of an Android-based TV software, much like it does with the operating system on phones and tablets. Android TV within Android 4.4 KitKat was previously tipped.
There are two logical places to announce Android TV, if it does indeed come to market: CES 2014 in January or Google I/O in May.
Google is notorious for making Google TV announcements at the tradeshow in Las Vegas during early January, so we may see Android TV there. If Google TV isn't discussed during the that show, then it may be a great sign of an Android TV announcement for later in the year.

Chromecast

Although it was released in 2013, the Chromecast's time to shine will be 2014. The low-cost media streaming dongle will be made available internationally, rather than sparsely in the US and UK during the next year.
null
Google vice-president of product Mario Queiroz told Gigaom: “We are going to be launching in a number of international markets." He added that people would be “pleasantly surprised” by the scope of this international expansion.
Furthermore, the Chromecast team will be opening up its SDK to make hundreds (if not thousands) of apps Chromecast-compatible. This push started in 2013 with the Netflix app, letting users push content from their mobile phone to TV at the press of a button. Google will also be partnering with consumer electronics companies to bring 'cast functionality to other devices in 2014.
It will be a big push for a larger audience. Developers will then see the media platform as an area of focus when adding features to their apps.

Nexus TV

Tech news publication The Information, which cited an anonymous Google employee, reported in December that Google will unveil a "Nexus TV" device in 2014. Perhaps running the Android TV. It will stream video content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc, and play video games. It won't support live broadcast like the Xbox One's media functionality, but it will be "aggressively priced".
null
Google's Andy Rubin reportedly gave private demonstrations of the prototype at CES 2013, showing off its Android OS and Hangouts functionality as core features. The box notably had a video camera and motion sensor and was originally rumoured to launch at Google I/O in 2013, but Google decided to show the Chromecast instead.
Could Google I/O in May 2014 be the Nexus TV's launch event?

Android past the smartphone and tablet

We're expecting a resurgence beyond the smartphone and tablet, and into the wearables space for Google. Samsung kicked things off on the Android side with the Galaxy Gear in 2013 and other manufacturers are expected to follow the company's lead in order to tackle the new market.
null
In March, the Financial Times reported that Google's Android division was working on its own smartwatch, more than likely in the Nexus program. Later in the year, 9to5google added to the speculation, saying a Google "Gem" smartwatch was coming. It will reportedly feature at-a-glance Google Now-like information tiles and Bluetooth 4.0 to take advantage of your phone's brains and give it the best battery life possible.

Chromebook

The Chromebook saw its first high-end model during 2013 with Google's Chrome Pixel, but 2014 will be a year of aiming for the budget crowd.
null
Chrome OS is built for lightweight machines. It allows manufacturers to keep down the price and still bring enough processing power for users to get work done.
Asus has already confirmed it will get in on the Chromebook market during 2014. We suspect Samsung, Asus, LG, Acer and HP will continue targeting schools and customers on a budget during the new year - probably with a focus on cheap touchscreens too.
The Chromebook platform struggles to gain marketshare, however. According to IDC numbers this week, the Chromebook market sat at 1 per cent of all shipped PCs and tablets in Q3 2013. Samsung led the way with roughly 652,000 Chromebooks shipped, and other vendors represented "tiny volume".
Could 2014 be the Chromebook's year?

Next-generation Google Glass for the public

Google Glass has been available for members of the "Explorer" program - those who paid $1,500 to check out the technology early - during 2013. Google plans to expand its wearables program in the new year with a Glass product aimed at the masses, and at a reasonable price point between $200-$600.
null
In April, Google chairman Eric Schmidt said: "Well, the developers are beginning now. It would be fair to say that there will be thousands of these in use by developers over the next months and based on their feedback we'll make some product changes and it's probably a year-ish away."
Google has been making major changes to Google Glass in the latter part of 2013, including the announcement of prescription lenses, an earbud accessory, several software enhancements, and a second version of Google Glass with small changes that Explorers can get for free.

Second-generation Nexus 10

The second-generation Nexus 10 was believed to be launching in autumn of 2013, but it never came. Now we suspect that the Asus-made product will be launched in 2014.
null
An earlier blip on Google Play told of a 10-inch screen at a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution for 300ppi, a customary Snapdragon 800 chipset along with a hefty 3GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear-camera, 2.1-megapixel front-camera, and a whopping 9,000mAh battery.
The 16GB version of the current Nexus 10 made by Samsung has seen its stock dwindle to non-existent in recent months. Usually, along with a new product launch, a company will drain the stock to make way for the new product.

Advancing voice search

Speaking to Computerworld, Google spokesperson Krisztina Radosavljevic-Szilagyi said Google had plans to focus on voice search in 2014. It not only wants to refine its search product on Android, but also to bring voice search in its Google app on iOS up to par with the Android platform.
"We're pretty close to par with Android," said Radosavljevic-Szilagyi. "On Android, we're also improving search all the time. Ultimately, we want people to be able to use search on both platforms the same way."
null
Google made big changes to its voice product in 2013, advancing Google Now to become one of the best performing voice assistants in the industry. Additionally, the Moto X brought Touchless Control, allowing users to say "OK Google" or "Ok Google (Now)" and then either execute the command or send the request to Google Voice Search, even with the handset's display off.
The feature then extended to Android 4.4 KitKat for even more handsets.
But Google still has further plans. "The interaction should become more natural," Radosavljevic-Szilagyi said. "With the growth in mobile, voice just becomes more natural."

2013 - A good year for some, a bad year for others

2013 - A good year for some, a bad year for others As with any year, 2013 had its ups and downs. MCV takes a look at some of the epic highs and crushing lows that companies in the industry faced in the last twelve months.
3DS
The portable has seen a number of critically
acclaimed released this year, hit 2m UK sales and is the UK’s No.1 console of 2013.
Capcom
Almost half of Capcom’s European office was made redundant this year after poor sales of Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6 and Lost Planet.

Deep Silver
After acquiring assets from THQ, Deep Silver shot up the publishing rankings. With Dead Island, Metro and Saints Row IV, the firm spent eight weeks at No.1 this year.

Trion Worlds
The ambitious MMO publisher had to cut staff from its Rift and Defiance development teams, and has since closed its European office, with 10 redundancies.

GAME

For all the retail troubles, GAME has thrived this year, refurbishing all its stores, opening new outlets, throwing more events and hiring more staff.

Square Enix
Considering how successful (and brilliant) Tomb Raider was, it’s surprising to see Square in here. But after failing to hit commercial targets, the Japanese giant has made a number of redundancies to its business, including in the UK.
